Uses for Plantain






PLANTAIN (Plantago major L.)

DescriptionLeaves are broad, ovaloid, toothed, and ribbed. Grooved stalk. Flowers are small, white, whorled and numerous. the root is fibrous. Plantains contain substances which might help decrease pain and swelling (inflammation), decrease mucous (phlegm) production, and open airways. It might also be able to kill bacteria and fungi. Approved for use in Europe due to broncho dialation effects, and proven as an antimicrobial.

USES

Edible uses 
Leaves, stems and flower buds.
  • Purslane is somewhat crunchy and has a slight lemony taste. Taste like watercress or spinach.
  • Young, raw leaves and stems are tender and are good in salads and sandwiches.
  • They can also be lightly steamed or stir-fried.
  • Purslane’s high level of pectin (known to lower cholesterol) thickens soups and stews and even pestos

Medical Uses
  • Teas from the leaves are used to treat coughs and bronchitis 
  • The tea also can help with indigestion, ulcers and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • The seeds of any plantain can lower cholesterol when ingested.
  • You can make a compress from the leaves strained from the tea to help treat skin irritations and eye irritations.
  •  You can make a poultice and use it for insect stings, sores and blisters. 
  •  It also helps sooth rashes and reactions from Poison Ivy, Oak or Sumac. You can spray the tea on it or use compresses.
  •  You can also use the compress and or poultice to help with burns and cuts eczema and psoriasis
  • You can use for urinary issues an infusion of the leaves. Ground the dry leaves and put a table spoon in six oz of water. Drink 3 to 4 times a day. (dry leaves work better the fresh) 
  • Can be used for hemorrhoid relief
  •  great for indigestion and ulcers

Historically was used for malaria, epilepsy dysentery and blood in urine as well as diarrhea.

Side note: As with any plant use caution this plant can cause dermatitis. Always check with you doctor before using any herbal remedies.

  1. I would doubt that plantain could cause dermatitis. It certainly can treat it though! I've been using this plant for many years. You might want to have a look at this:
